  4.     Time was when an editorial frown in Pravda could destroy the
  5. career of a party apparatchik or send a dissident to jail. But
  6. the demise of the Communist Party following last August's coup
  7. and the rising cost of newsprint today have put the squeeze on
  8. the former party newspaper. With its circulation down from 12
  9. million to 1.3 million, Pravda announced last week that it will
  10. henceforth appear only on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. It
  11. may go out of business altogether in April.

  13.     Founded in 1912 by Vladimir Ilyich Lenin, Pravda was
  14. closed three times by Czar Nicholas, and again by Alexander
  15. Kerensky in 1917. The once proud party organ last week lamented,
  16. with fine irony, the "planned economic strangulation of free,
  17. independent media."
